Giant Caterpillar Sculpture
Ages 3-7
Langley Mill Infants and Nursery School

This particular school already had some materials to use and wanted ideas of how they may use them in the creation of a sculpture for the playground.

The school had a group of old willow tree stumps situated in the playground that produced many shoots each year and wanted to put the cuttings to use. In addition to the willow cuttings, they had a large amount of various sized tyres that they wished to use.

A giant sized caterpillar was designed. Mild steel and chicken wire was used to create each of the six spherical body parts, to separate each body part a car tyre was used, finally the smaller go-cart tyres were used as feet.

Over the space of a week the entire school got involved in the project, the children used pre soaked and prepared willow withies to weave onto the structure to give a covering to the caterpillar. Eyes, nose, mouth and feelers were added to give the caterpillar character.

Every year the school can use their clippings from their willow stumps to add to the caterpillar’s body so each successive school year can feel that they have contributed to the playground sculpture.
