Natural Playground Sculpture
Ages 3-7
Sawley Infants and Nursery School

As the age range and abilities were very different, the project was designed to enable all to take part.

The children wove supple willow rods between metal uprights in groups of between 5 and10 at any one time.

Each group worked on the sculpture for periods of up to 30 min depending on age.

The large sculpture was made in situ in the playground with the youngest participants first and then the older children. The year 2 children made moving components that created spinning spheres that the children could interact with in the playground.

The project was a success and everyone was able to create a part of the sculpture. The children learnt about coppiced materials, how it grows and is harvested, and also its uses both modern and traditional.
