Nestled down a small alley in the town of Ilkeston, Derbyshire is Shed 2 Studios, a creative workshop that houses a collective of Designer/makers and artists.

Established in 2007 by a group of graduates from the 3D Sustainable Design Program at Derby University who were looking for a dirty work space that could house a woodworker, jeweler, sculptor and lighting designer.

Beginning in a simple industrial unit, the group quickly outgrew it and looked for larger premises. An old factory building came available that featured large windows running down the length, an outside yard, a private car park, but most importantly was three times the size and rent was very reasonable.

This building became Shed 2 Studios, the open plan space helped to recreate the atmosphere that they enjoyed throughout their years together in University.

The last few years has seen the studio grow and now boasts collections from a furniture maker, lighting designer, bespoke jeweler, sculptor and fine artist, and is set to become one of the leading centre’s for creating sustainable contemporary Art and Design in the Midlands.

The open plan environment allows for the creative exchange between designers and prevents the feeling of isolation that can often be present for solo artists and makers.

The studio opens twice a year to offer the general public a rare glimpse into the studio life and the chance to see where work is created, meet the makers and commission something special.
