The Medium Bronze Sphere is a unique bronze sculpture, cast from an original wax form created through a combination of crochet and Swirl weave techniques.
The 25cm-diameter sphere is patinated in a beautiful verdigris tone and mounted on a speckled grey granite base measuring 30 × 30cm, which sits on a tall plinth.
Each sculpture begins with a sketch, developing an idea of form, size and scale. To create the hollow sphere, a solid negative core is carved from investment plaster.
The sculptural surface is then built by hand in fine 3mm wax, using a combination of crochet and Swirl weave. The individual strands and details of this fragile wax form are preserved through the lost-wax casting process, transforming the temporary woven structure into enduring bronze.
Once cast, the sculpture is patinated in a colour chosen by the artist, finished with Rachel's signature stamp and polished with beeswax before being mounted onto its granite plinth.
